... treatment of all used Dutch fuel
On November 17, the UP3 plant began a treatment run involving 28 used fuel elements owned by Dutch utility EPZ. As of November 23, all of EPZ's used fuel at the plant, i.e. 8.94 metric tons, had been sheared. The run falls under the contract amendment signed by AREVA and the Dutch utility in 1993 and pertains chiefly to the used fuel received in December 2005.

(1)The fission products (ultimate residues of spent fuel) are incorporated in heated glass to approximately 1100°C. The whole is poured in stainless steel containers. The fission products are an integral part of stable, compact and resistant glass. This process is called vitrification.
