Vitrified Waste Shipment from the UK to Switzerland

As announced today by International Nuclear Services (INS), preparatory work is underway for a shipment of vitrified nuclear waste from the United Kingdom to Switzerland.

INS, a subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), is responsible for this shipment. INS has contracted with AREVA TN, AREVA’s Nuclear Logistics business, to safely manage the ground transportation in France.

This vitrified waste is the result of reprocessing and recycling of used nuclear fuel from the Sellafield site in the United Kingdom. This fuel had been previously used in Swiss nuclear reactors for electricity production.

The implicated organizations will provide further information that is both transparent and respects the security constraints.
