United States: Bechtel begins construction of Hanford vitrification plant

On July 12, Bechtel will break ground for the Hanford vitrification plant, which will process some 241 million liters of radioactive and chemical waste now stored at the site over a period of 23 years. Ron Naventi, Bechtel project director, indicated that construction will be in full swing by 24 July. The plant is scheduled to begin processing waste in 2007.
