10/31/2008
Press release

AREVA announced today that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a contract to USA Repository Services LLC, a subsidiary of URS Corp. that includes AREVA and the Shaw Group, to manage the used nuclear fuel repository project at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The five-year contract, which includes an option for five additional years, is valued at $2.5 billion.

The USA Repository Services partnership will have several key responsibilities under this management and operation contract. It will complete the detailed design of the repository, address questions on the license application submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) earlier this year, operate the existing Yucca Mountain facilities before construction authorization, and support management of construction and operation activities at the repository.

The principal AREVA contribution to the project will be in the surface facility design and to lend its expertise in support of the NRC review of the license application.

“AREVA is extremely pleased that our team has been selected by DOE for this critical project,” said Jacques Besnainou, President of AREVA Inc. “AREVA brings proven, relevant expertise to move our nation’s repository to completion and operation. We look forward to working with our team and DOE to assure the disposition of used fuel and radioactive waste is accomplished in a safe and secure manner.”
