The earthworks for a new interim storage facility for French vitrified waste* have begun at the AREVA La Hague site. The new facility will start operating in 2012. It will add 4,212 storage spaces to the 12,500 existing ones for the safe interim storage of vitrified waste. Seventy million euros are being invested over a period of four years for the project, which will mobilize 120 people at the construction site.
French vitrified waste is currently placed in interim storage at the AREVA La Hague site, pending the opening of a permanent disposal site in deep geologic repository under Andra management. The future site’s exact location and storage conditions are to be decided by 2015, and operations are expected to start in 2025.
Foreign vitrified waste is shipped back to the country of origin, in accordance with French law.
* High-level waste embedded in glass to ensure safe, stable, very-long-term confinement.
