A rail transport of vitrified waste to Switzerland is scheduled to leave the TN International terminal of Valognes (France) in the next hours and reach Würenlingen (Switzerland) from September 6th, 2006.
According to the commercial contracts between the Swiss utilities and AREVA NC, part of the nuclear spent fuel is sent to France for reprocessing. Return of the vitrified waste, which results from reprocessing, is stipulated by intergovernmental agreements between France and Switzerland.
The cask transported, a TN81 model, contains 28 canisters of vitrified waste. Upon its arrival in Würenlingen, it will be loaded onto a specific road trailer to be transferred to the storage facility of ZWILAG (Switzerland).
The cask used for transport fully complies with the very strict regulation criteria defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Besides, nuclear material transportation meets national and international regulations that guarantee a high level of safety.
