A second maritime transport to Japan of European fabricated MOX fuel is scheduled to leave Europe on January 19th 2001. This transport is taking place in association with the contracts signed between the COGEMA Group and the ten Japanese Utilities to recycle their nuclear spent fuel. The governments and industrial partners of Japan, France and UK have been closely co-ordinating and preparing the operation for this second shipment to Japan.
According to the communication policy decided and previously implemented, we communicate the following information related to this second shipment:
1 - Scheduled Date of departure from Europe: January, 19th 2001 GMT
2 - Name of the vessels: Pacific Pintail, Pacific Teal
3 - Departing Port: Cherbourg (France)
4 - Total number of fuel assemblies 28 assemblies
5 - Total number of casks: 4 casks
The transportation of nuclear material, including MOX fuel, is strictly governed by an established system of international regulations covering the special transport packages, known as "casks", the design of the purpose-built ships and the physical protection arrangements. Nuclear material has been safely transported by sea since the 1960's. For the MOX shipments, two armed PNTL vessels will escort each other, and they will depart from Europe together.
his second shipment of MOX fuel is assigned for the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). The route and the approximate timing of arrival in Japan will be released one day after departure from Europe. This statement is being released simultaneously in UK, France and Japan by BNFL, COGEMA and TEPCO respectively. In Cherbourg, a press meeting point will be opened at the Mercure Hotel on January 19th 2001 at 6h00 am (French time).
