Ringhals 1: improvement of the reactor protective system

7/15/2010
News brief

The Swedish Alliance project to enhance the safety of the reactor protection system (RPS) in unit 1 of Ringhals nuclear power plant has been successfully completed. Almost one year to the day after the start of the outage work during which AREVA's TELEPERM XS digital safety I&C system was implemented, the reactor protection system is fully operational once again.

Within the scope of this project to enhance the safety of the RPS, an additional and independent safety function was introduced which complements the existing system and was set up using TELEPERM XS. Simultaneously occurring events, such as a fire in one subsystem and a fault in another subsystem of the plant, can be controlled more reliably. This marks a major advance in terms of reactor safety.

The Alliance model is a project execution concept that offers advantages for all the parties involved. The focus of the project execution, jointly managed by the customer and the supplier, is on finding a technically optimal, reliable solution at a low cost. Contractual and legal issues fade into the background as the framework is well defined from the very beginning of the project. The cost transparency implemented for the customer in the project means that changes and adaptations can be agreed upon more quickly and effectively.

The satisfaction of all those involved and the thoroughly positive feedback of the customer in the Ringhals RPS Alliance project paves the way for similar alliances with customers in the industry.
