Preparation of the twelfth transport of nuclear vitrified waste to Germany

11/14/2011
Press release

The twelfth transport of vitrified waste from France to Germany is under preparation.

According to the commercial contracts signed between the German power companies and AREVA, part of the German nuclear spent fuel had been sent to France for recycling. Return to Germany of the vitrified nuclear waste resulting from reprocessing is in accordance with the commercial contracts, is required by the French law and has led to intergovernmental agreements concluded between France and Germany

The road transfers of eleven casks between AREVA La Hague plant and TN International railroad terminal located in Valognes are currently in progress.

The quantity of material is equivalent to that transported during the previous transport in 2010

The maximum value of dose rate measured last year was of 0,07 mSv / hour at 2 meters of the rail cars (for a radiation protection level of 0,1 mSv / hour). Someone staying for more than 14 hours at 2 meters of a rail car would have reached the dose rate of pelvis radio that is 1 mSv.

The next press release, issued upon the train departure, will give the exact values of dose rates for this shipment (values measured a few days before departure)
