Preparation is underway for shipment of nuclear waste from France to Australia

In brief

Preparation is underway for shipment of nuclear waste from France to Australia. This transport is part of a contract signed in 1999 between AREVA and ANSTO (Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation) for the processing of used nuclear fuel.

The shipment contains intermediate and low-level waste. The waste, which was reprocessed at AREVA’s la Hague plant in France, is the by-product of fuel that had previously been used in the Australian HIFAR research reactor, enabling generations of nuclear medicine production.

As agreed to by the French and Australian governments, the companies will provide, in due course, information that is both transparent and respects security constraints.
