News brief

The new ultrasonic probeThe business unit Nuclear Measurements (BU NM) has secured an order of several millions Euros order for the supply of a Waste Assay Solution for the Engineered Drum Store facility at Sellafield in the United Kingdom.

Sellafield Ltd. is the BU's largest customer in the UK whose main activities include decommissioning, fuel manufacture and fuel reprocessing.

The complex solution is based on a High Efficiency Passive Neutron Counter (HENC) working in tandem with an Auto Q2 Low Level Waste Assay System in order to segregate low level waste material from Plutonium-contaminated material (PCM) to significantly reduce Sellafield’s on-site PCM storage costs.

This new contract is for the design, manufacture, testing, delivery, installation and commissioning of the system. This project will be delivered through collaboration between the Canberra UK and Meriden facilities.
The award of this contract in November 2010 was the culmination of two years of work. The key factors to secure this win were:

  • proven track record with the previous successful delivery of two Can Content Monitor Systems at SPRS, Sellafield,
  • recognition of CANBERRA’s technical expertise and ability to deliver a large system project,
  • good competitive intelligence to determine the appropriate pricing,
  • coordinated multiple interactions at different levels between the Nuclear Measurement BU team and Sellafield stakeholders.
