Earthquake in Pakistan: AREVA supports the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

AREVA has joined forces with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies following the violent earthquake that ravaged northern regions of Pakistan and India on October 8, 2005.

AREVA has donated 100,000 euros to reinforce action already undertaken by group employees in both countries.

AREVA's donation will be used to supply winter tents which are considered as a priority. For information, a winter tent for a family costs approximately 485 euros. The help provided by the group will also be used to provide blankets, mattresses, stoves and other basic items essential to the survivors.

According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, thousands of survivors could die of cold if they do not receive adequate assistance during the winter. The number of survivors is increasing as communities previously cut off from the world are discovered. Children and the elderly are in a particularly critical situation.

The Federation has set up a logistics and operational base in Mansehra, 125 kilometers north of Islamabad. From here, special relief teams are sent to the north west frontier province to provide health care and restore clean water supplies. So far, almost 90 international delegates from 19 different national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies are involved in the operation. 

To date, over 200 truckloads of relief goods have reached affected areas. Some 9,000 tents and 40,000 blankets have been distributed. Furthermore, almost 40 humanitarian flights carrying 1,600 items of relief goods, medical supplies and emergency response equipment (including water purification units and basic health care) have arrived in Pakistan.  

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies facilitates and promotes all Red Cross and Red Crescent humanitarian activities. The federation was founded in 1919 and manages and coordinates international aid to victims of technological and/or natural catastrophes and refugees, as well as providing emergency health aid.
