AREVA inaugurates the world’s first hydrogen backup power system for Data Centers

6/20/2012

Hélion, the AREVA subsidiary specialized in the use of hydrogen and energy storage, and its partner Modul’Data Center have inaugurated today the world's first backup power system connected to a Data Center and working with a fuel cell.

On this occasion, more than fifty people, including professionals from the industry, as well as from the institutional and the telecommunications sectors, came to AREVA’s site in Aix-en-Provence to learn more about the electrical backup system developed by the group connected to the modular data center of Modul’Data Center.

With a power rating of 30 kW and based on innovative fuel cell technology, the AREVA electrical backup power system has many benefits to offer. In addition to emitting zero CO2, it also offers improved reliability compared to conventional backup power solutions and requires very little maintenance.

Thanks to this decisive technical innovation, data centers throughout the world can now benefit from a new set of options for guaranteeing the continuity of their electrical power supply, including in environments where such a supply would not be reliable, or even exist.

Jérôme Gosset, President of AREVA's Hydrogen and Energy Storage subsidiary, declared: "This solution showcases our expertise in the manufacturing of reliable equipment for industrial use and in our ability to master an innovative technology which reduces the environmental impact of Data Centers. This world première potentially paves the way to a whole new market, that of green IT, which is now opening up for fuel cell-based solutions."
