Partner of the “Institut Curie” for 8 years, the AREVA Foundation renewed its support to the Institute’s Orsay Proton Therapy Center during 3 years and will finance the acquisition of:
- - optic devices and flat panel detectors to expand the range of tumors that can be treated, including for children,
- - computer software for precise, high-speed calculation of doses received by the patients. As this can now be done outside the treatment room, the room can be vacated faster and more people can be treated.
The AREVA Foundation has already contributed to give equipments dedicated to the anesthesia ward and the children’s recovery room and made an acquisition of a medical imaging device for the proton therapy center.
The proton therapy center has been completely renovated during four years. The new center can now receive up to 450 cancer patients per year, including about forty children.

The protonthérapie was born around an accelerator of nuclear physics, the synchrocyclotron, built in 1954 on the initiative of Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie, themselves at the origin of the tremendous development of the nuclear energy in France.
Proton therapy is one of the more successful forms of precision radiation therapy. Since 1991, when it was first used at Orsay, more than 5,000 patients have had the treatment, with very positive results.
