Press release

Design of ATMEA1ATMEA, a joint venture between AREVA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has submitted, on February 15, 2011, the ATMEA1™ reactor for a pre-project design review with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The ATMEA1™ reactor is under consideration as part of the proposed Clean Energy Park near the Point Lepreau nuclear station in New Brunswick.

The province of New Brunswick, the Utility New Brunswick Power and AREVA, signed a letter of intent last July to develop a Clean Energy Park that would feature a mid-sized reactor and renewable generation built by AREVA.

If approved by the CNSC, the ATMEA1™ design also could be selected at sites in other Canadian provinces.

“This is an important step forward for the proposed Clean Energy Park project in New Brunswick and for the pursuit of new nuclear generation in Canada. Projects such as these would create thousands of jobs in Canada and spur billions of dollars in regional investment,” said Jacques Besnainou, CEO of AREVA North America.

ATMEA1™ is a 1,100 megawatt Generation III+ pressurized water reactor (PWR) using reliable and proven technology, developed by ATMEA., and AREVA and MHI joint-venture.
The ATMEA1™ reactor is under certification in France, where the construction of a unit is studied.
