Biographical Information
Ana Palacio, born on July 22, 1948, is a lawyer by profession, specialized in European Community Law. In 1987, she launched and managed a successful law firm. She served as a Member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2002. During her mandate, she chaired the Committee on Legal Affairs and Internal Market, as well as the Committee on Justice and Home Affairs. She also chaired the Conference of Committee Chairmen, the Parliament's most senior body for the coordination of its legislative work
In 2002, she became the first woman to take office as Foreign Affairs Minister of Spain, before joining the Spanish Parliament as Chairman of the Joint Committee of the two Houses for European Affairs from 2004 to 2006.
