The AREVA corporate Foundation has been preventing illiteracy since 2009, financing literacy programs for children and adults and also volunteer trainer programs.
The Foundation has just decided to renew its patnership with the French national literacy agency (ANCLI - Agence Nationale de Lutte Contre l’Illettrisme) for three more years from 2014 to 2017.
All parents wish success to their children. But numerous are those who are unfamiliar with the school system and who do not know how to proceed to help them. The problem is even harder for parents who are unable to master basic knowledge (reading, writing…).
To deal with this issue, the French national literacy agency has initiated, in 2008, the education actions for families in order to :
• help children perform better academically
• encourage the participation of parents who have trouble reading and writing.
In practice, these actions are reading sessions for children in elementary or high schools and their parents, training sessions dedicated to parents to learn basic reading and writing skills to tutor their children…
AREVA Foundation is providing financial support to the “Actions Educatives Familiales” next to its industrial sites in France in Bollène, Lyon, Chalon-sur-Saône, Aix-en-Provence, Maubeuge, Cherbourg, Jeumont and Ile-de-France region.
In 2015, there were:
- 13 locations for programs conducted by 8 units,
- 540 parents with introductory training or participating in workshops with their children,
- nearly 800 children receiving support or having participated in programs,
- 10 shows and 29 representations given,
- 531 volunteers and tutor trained.
Created in 2000, the French national literacy agency mobilizes and federates players both at the institutional level and on the ground to prevent and fight against illiteracy.
Illiteracy is a taboo and the source of embarrassment for many. A source of exclusion, illiteracy is an issue which affects people in all areas, of all ages and from all walks of life. In France today, there are 2,500,000 people, which corresponds to 7 % of the population from 18 to 65 years of age, who do not have basic literacy skills despite having been to school.
Knowing how to read, write and count is essential to allow people to be self-sufficient in simple, everyday life situations: to dial a telephone number, withdraw money from an ATM machine, understand a map of the subway system, read the recommended dosage of a medicine, or a school report…
