AREVA Corporate Foundation: our commitment to rolling back illiteracy

9/10/2015
In brief

What is illiteracy? It is a problem that is all too often underestimated because it is invisible and still a taboo subject today. In France, more than 2.5 million people from the ages of 16 to 65 are illiterate, even though they have received schooling. This is why prevention at an early age is so important.

Following in the footsteps of UNESCO's International Literacy Day, National Literacy Week, September 8 to 13, 2015, offers a unique opportunity to make the public at large aware of this situation in France.

Under the leadership of the National Agency for the Fight Against Illiteracy (ANLCI), an AREVA Corporate Foundation partner, a variety of local events will be conducted during Literacy Week to draw attention to existing local solutions.

An example among hundreds is the “Faites des livres” educational program put on by the Paul Langevin Foyer in Saint-Junien in the Limousin region with support from the AREVA Foundation, which aims to (re)develop a love of reading in 65 junior high school students with learning difficulties.

The AREVA Corporate Foundation has been acting on its strong commitment to preventing illiteracy among youngsters since 2010.
